4 Day Plains and Coast Great Taste Cycle Trail

Cycle one of the most memorable sections of the Great Taste Trail, starting in Tapawera and finishing in the charming village of Wakefield. This ride covers approximately 38 km and takes around 3.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the scenery.

The route follows an old railway corridor and passes through a landscape of regenerating bush, farmland, and river flats before reaching one of the trail’s highlights—Spooners Tunnel. At 1.4 km, it’s the longest decommissioned rail tunnel open to cyclists in the Southern Hemisphere. Bring your bike lights or a headlamp, as it gets dark and cool inside, creating a unique and slightly eerie experience as you ride through. After emerging on the other side, the trail gradually descends through open countryside and into Wakefield, where you can refuel with a coffee or a bite to eat at a local café.

From there, you'll ride alongside the bird-rich Waimea Estuary and across to Rabbit Island (Moturoa)—a forested coastal haven perfect for a rest stop or beachside picnic. After enjoying the flat, shaded trails of the island, catch the bike ferry across to Mapua Wharf, where boutique galleries, cafes, and local brews await. It’s a ride that offers everything from rural serenity to coastal flair.

Cycle from the creative buzz of Mapua to the golden sands of Kaiteriteri, one of the most visually rewarding sections of the Great Taste Trail. This journey covers approximately 43 km and takes around 4 to 6 hours, depending on how often you stop to enjoy the views—or sample local treats along the way.

Leaving Mapua, you'll glide along quiet coastal roads and estuary edges before climbing gently inland through rolling countryside and orchards. The route passes through the vibrant town of Motueka, a great place to pause for a coffee, local produce, or even a swim at the nearby beach. From there, the trail transitions into a beautifully engineered off-road section through native bush and boardwalks, culminating in a rewarding descent into Kaiteriteri, the gateway to Abel Tasman National Park. With its turquoise water, soft golden sand, and relaxed resort vibe, it's the perfect place to end your day’s ride—or stay awhile and explore further.

Take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, browse the creative studios, or join the locals for a refreshing swim off the wharf at high tide. You could even take a short side trip to Upper Moutere, known for its wineries, artist studios and rural charm. A rest day in Mapua not only breaks up the ride but adds a relaxed, cultural layer to your cycling holiday before you continue to the golden beaches of Kaiteriteri the next day.
