The trail is a loop, but we recommend riding clockwise for a more scenic descent into Baton Valley. Our Nelson depot(on St Vincent Street) is right on the trail, with changing rooms and secure parking ($10/day).

Flying is the most direct option. If driving:

  • From the North Island, take the Cook Strait ferry.
  • From Christchurch, expect about a 6-hour drive.

Expect variable conditions year-round.

  • Spring/Summer: 12–25°C
  • Winter: 3–12°C

While it’s one of NZ’s sunniest regions, weather can still shift quickly—pack layers.

The trail is divided into 4–5 sections, each 35–63km. It’s built for exploration, not speed—plan extra time to enjoy stops and local produce.

Expect average speeds of 10–15km/h depending on fitness.

Ride regularly before your trip, especially on gravel or off-road surfaces. There are a few hills, so some hill training helps. If hiring an e-bike, test one beforehand.

Try the West Coast Wilderness, Alps 2 Ocean, or Paparoa Track—all unique in scenery and style. Our team can help you choose and plan.
